Create Your Own Eggshell Geodes

9/4/2018

Picture
Try this activity to see how crystals grow inside a geode!

What you will need:

  • 3 Eggs
  • Red, Blue and Green Food Colouring
  • Table Salt
  • Sugar
  • Baking Soda
  • Hot Water
  • A Cupcake Pan
What to do:
  1. Gently crack the top off your eggs and empty the yolk. Then carefully clean the bottom halves of the shells.
  2. Place the emptied egg shells into a cupcake tin. You can place a tissue in the bottom of the cupcake tin to help steady the egg shells.
  3. In each shell mix together 1/4 cup hot water, 1/8 cup sugar, and a different drop of food colouring for each shell.
  4. Set your egg shells aside and watch how the crystal grows inside them over the next five days.
  5. Look to see which mixtures made the most crystals.
What does this experiment show us?
  • Real geodes are formed when minerals that have been dissolved gather in hollow spaces in the earth.
  • Those minerals continue growing inside the inner shell of the geode, creating the crystals.
  • In our eggshells the minerals are the salt, sugar and baking soda mixture, and they are the minerals that form the crystals in the shells.
