Watermelon Counting Game

8/11/2014

Picture
What better way to finish off the summer, than playing a counting game with some summer fruit!

This activity helps children to match number symbols and quantities, and also gets children more familiar with their numbers and counting!

For all the parents who are interested in creating this game themselves, all you will need is the following:
- green and red/pink felt
-thin strip/button magnets
-glass beads (or anything black and round like watermelon seeds) (found in craft stores)

Step 1: trace a large bowl and cut in half for the shape of the watermelon slice (paper or cardboard will do)
Step 2: Cut out your red and green felt into the proper shapes for the watermelon wedge (see pictures on website)
Step 3: Attach green and red felt pieces via sewing machine or glue gun, and attach the thin strip magnets to the back of the watermelon slice (via glue gun)
Step 4: To create the "seeds", take the flat side of your beads, and attach the button magnets via glue gun

If you want to make this game a little more challenging, use magnetic numbers above the watermelon wedge and have children match the quantity of seeds to the number above!
