This easy and fun science activity is a great way for your child to learn something new while celebrating a special birthday!

DIY Cloud in a Jar

What you will need:
  • A Jar and Lid
  • 1/3 a Cup of Hot Water
  • Ice
  • Hairspray
Directions:
  1. Start by pouring the hot water in to the jar. Make sure you swirl the hot water around in the jar so the side of the jar get warm.
  2. Turn the lid of the jar upside down and place it on top of the jar. Place 4-5 ice cubes on the upside down lid for about 20 seconds.
  3. Remove the lid and quickly spray hairspray into the jar, then replace the lid on top of the jar and watch the cloud start to form.
  4. When you start to see enough condensation form remove the lid and watch the cloud escape into the surrounding air.
How Does it Happen:
  • When you added the warm water to the jar some of the water evaporates into water vapor and rises to the top of the jar.
  • When you added the ice cubes, the water vapor hits the cold air at the top of the jar. The water vapor then condenses when it cools down.
  • A cloud can only be formed when the water vapor has something to condense on to. In nature, water vapor condenses onto dust particles, air pollution, pollen or other things in the air.
  • In our experiment the water vapor condensed on to the hair spray we added.
